Ganapathi Homam

Ganapathi homam is performed to be get happiness, prosperity and good health. Anyone is desirous of praying to God to remove any obstacles in any of his plan/ work/Business /action and also to be victorious in his deeds can pray to Lord Ganesha. Ganapathi homam can be performed to please Kethu and hence anyone who has Kethu dasha or bhukthi or wishes to appease Kethu can participate in the homam. Performing Ganapathy Homam once every year gives prosperity, health and wealth.

Ganapathi Homam should be done early in the morning and finished before sunrise.

Padi Pooja

Padi Pooja, or the pooja of the Pathinettam Padi, is performed in the evening on certain days at the temple.Padi pooja in the name of the 18 Hill Gods of Lord Ayyappa was conducted after Pushpabhishekam.Thantri performed the ritual in the presence of Melsanthi.The hour-long ritual by decorating the Holy Steps with flowers and silk cloths after lighting traditional lamps on each step, concluded with performing “aarathi” by the thantri.

Udayasthamana Pooja

Udayasthamaya literally means from sunrise to sunset. Hence it implies worship from sunrise to sunset. Udayasthamana pooja is conducted from dawn to dust (from Nirmalyam to Athazha pooja). In addition to the Nithya pooja, special poojas with Archanas and Abhishekams are conducted to obtain the “Anugraham” of Bhagavan which enable to fulfill the wishes of the devotee. Out of total 18 poojas 15 are done before noon and there are 45 kalasabhishekams.

Ulsava Bali

The rituals of Ulsava Bali began with the sounding of Paani .Ulsava Bali is dedicated to the Bhoothaganams (associates of the presiding deity) and Paani is meant to invite the Bhoothaganams. Then begins the sprinkling of cooked raw rice (Ulsava Bali Thooval) to cover the balikallu of the Bhoothaganams around the Naalambalam and Balikkalpura by the temple Thanthri. When the sprinkling of the cooked rice over the Saptha Maathrukkal was completed, the Thidambu of the presiding deity was taken out of the sanctum sanctorum to enable the devotees to offer prayers.

Kalabhabhishekam

‘Kalabhabhishekam’ is a very important special pooja usually performed in Kerala for the strengthening of the chaithanya of the Deity.As part of kalabhabhishekam, Thantri performed the Kalabhakalasa pooja at the Nalambalam in the presence of Melsanthi . Kalabhakalasabhishekam, marking the conclusion of the ritual by pouring the sandalwood paste on the idol of Lord Ayyappa, was performed during the ucha pooja by the thantri after the procession carrying the golden urn having sandal paste for the Kalabhabhishekam by around the sreekovil.

Laksharchana

ARCHANA means “chanting and glorifying the Divine name”. LAK means 100,000. Therefore, LAKSHARCHANA is the name and practice of repeating in a group, the name of the Lord in the form of a Mantra.

Later, the tantri, assisted by melsanthi and some other priests performed a Laksharchana at the Sannidhanam. The `Brahmakalasam’ of the laksharchana were taken in procession to the sanctum sanctorum for `abhishekam’, prior to the `Uchapuja’.

Sahasrakalasam

Sahasra Kalasam is an offering to Hariharaputhra (Sri Dharmashastha) as per the Thantric Veda and Agama Shastras with a view to sleek blessings for the happiness of the mankind. It is the noble effort to invoke all the holy spirits of utilizing all that is sacred in the form of incense, the precious and semiprecious stone, the seven seas, and the sacred rivers into the holy kalasam (Sacred Pot) of gold, silver, copper etc.

Vritam during 41 days

Lord Ayyapa devotees who wish to go to Sabarimala temple observe vritham or follow certain austerities during the mandalam season(41 days). The main Aim of the vritham is to purify the mind and the soul. Since Lord Ayyapa Is a “Brahmachari”, every devotees must have to follow ”Brahmacharyam” during these days.

Austerities during 41days

  • Waking up early and having bath
  • Visiting nearby temples and give offerings
  • Devotees take food only after bathing and praying
  • Devotees try to consume fresh and homely food
  • Non-Vegetarian food should totally avoided during these days

Restrictions to ladies

Only girls below the age of 10 and ladies above the age of 50 are permitted to climb up the hills to Sabarimala is the practice that has been followed, in respect of Sabarimala pilgrimage. Ladies in the age group from 10 year to 50 years are not allowed to make pilgrimage from Pampa to Sabarimala. All ladies in the age group has to stay at Pampa
